Asthma Prevention

Since asthma is not a curable disease at this time, there are important asthma prevention strategies that individuals can use to help control or eliminate asthma attacks or symptoms. Most of the asthma prevention strategies are fairly easy to do with a bit of creativity and attention to surroundings and your environment.

One of the most important things to start is an asthma journal. This booklet contains a day-by-day account of asthma conditions, both good and bad. By consistently keeping an asthma journal you will be able to identify not only the conditions that cause you problems, but also those that do not bother your asthma. In the journal you should note:

  • The date and the weather conditions
  • The time of the asthma problem, if there was one
  • What you ate
  • What you were doing
  • Who or what was around you
  • Any perfumes, colognes, hair products or other scented products that you or the people around you are using
  • Any new items, pets or furniture in your home
  • Any new plants or flowers in the house or around the house

Being very specific will help in asthma prevention because you should start to see a pattern of asthma symptoms or lack of symptoms.

Avoid Triggers

After you determine what triggers or environmental factors are problematic, the next step is to eliminate them from your environment as much as possible. There are several asthma triggers that are often difficult for most asthma patients, and these include cigarette or tobacco smoke, pollens, dust, perfumes, some aerosol sprays, molds, feathers, animal dander and hair, sudden temperature changes as well as exercise. In addition, some adults and children have severe reactions to aspirin that can cause asthma attacks. It is estimated by the American Lung Association that one in five adults with asthma has an aspirin-related asthma attack.

Stay Healthy

Asthma is a chronic condition that can affect the overall health of the individual. One way to assist in asthma prevention is to eat a balanced diet, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and consume as many foods as possible that contain antioxidants. Some health experts recommend drinking green tea or other herbal teas that have high levels of antioxidants to help control and eliminate free radicals in the blood that can lead to health complications.

Moderate exercise with a consistent warm-up and cool-down routine is also important. Increasing and maintaining lung capacity is critical in the prevention of asthma.

If at all possible, get a flu vaccination every fall and avoid contact with people that have flu or flu-like symptoms. Washing your hands frequently and using good personal hygiene will also help eliminate many of the germs that you may come into contact with.

Asthma prevention is not difficult; it is just a series of good habits that everyone should work towards developing.
