Herbs For Asthma

As with most conditions, there are both prescription and over-the-counter drugs used to treat the symptoms and conditions of asthma. In addition to prescription and non-prescription drugs, there are an increasing number of herbs that can be used to treat many of the precursor or chronic conditions of asthma. Care needs to be taken when combining herbs with prescription or non-prescriptions drugs, as there is always the possibility or a drug reaction or adverse condition occurring. Herbs for asthma should not be used in the case of a moderate or severe asthma attack but they are often very effective in controlling the chronic symptoms of asthma.

Some of the most commonly used herbs for asthma are:

Comfrey – historically one of the most used herbs for a wide variety of symptoms, it is usually consumed in a tonic for asthma and respiratory conditions. It works to decrease inflammation and help tissue repair.

Mullein – works to relax the muscles and decrease irritation due to coughing. This herb is used in most herbal combinations that are indicated for use with respiratory disorders.

St. John’s Wort – acts as an anti-anxiety herb and helps with relaxation and decreasing stress levels. For those individuals that have problems with stress-related asthma attacks, it can be very effective in decreasing the stress triggers. Some individuals will have a photosensitivity issue when consuming St. John’s Wort, so work closely with your physician if you plan to use this daily.

Bloodroot – may be used in very small amounts in adults, not recommended in children. It acts to break up the mucus plugs and acts as an expectorant. It is extremely poisonous if used in large dosages so must be used with caution at all times.

Saw Palmetto – another general purpose herb, this one will act to relax the muscles as well as break up mucus in the respiratory system. Large dosages can have a sedative effect so should be taken with care until the correct dosage is determined.

Cayenne – used as a stimulant it helps overall respiratory and circulatory functions. It is often used in combination with the expectorant herbs after an asthma attack to clear the respiratory passages.

Garlic – acts as a natural antibiotic and also as an expectorant. It is also seen as a herb that increases overall body condition and may help increase the strength and health of the patient.

Peppermint – can be used as a steaming agent added to boiling water. The patient then simply breathes in the vapors of the steam. The herb will help soothe and relax the airways and break up the mucus.

Herbs for asthma can be used in conjunction with prescribed medications but they should not replace prescription medications unless you are under the care of a physician. Many holistic physicians are very knowledgeable in the use of natural products and herbs for asthma and can help you decide the best combinations to use.
